Hot Nashville Turkey Breast Sandwiches

It is now what I would say is the dead middle of winter and we are knee-deep in heavy snow, melting slush and all of the ice you can imagine. The holiday weight is upon us and those Skip the Dishes apps are being deleted off our phones and re-downloaded as we crave those warm hearty meals of weeks past us holiday lovers crave. This is the time for those stews, those carb-heavy meals because let's face it - bathing suit season feels years away am I right?

As much as I agree with this I do have my goals in place for this year. Becoming healthier and making better eating choices to help achieve the things I want to accomplish - who says you can't have both? Today we are bringing you an amazing healthy recipe that can be done in a few different variations to hopefully fit your diet without breaking those calorie goals you have set for yourself this January.

We as a family often reach for chicken breast as a protein source - but what about Turkey? Turkey seems like a great idea for large portion meals such as Thanksgiving and Christmas but what about smaller family meals? The protein to the fat content of turkey breast is incredible and unlike what I used to believe, this cut of meat is phenomenal and preferred in some of our dishes now! When I think of turkey I think of the dry overcooked turkey I would have to cover in gravy, mashed potatoes and any other side dish to make it tolerable. Guess what - turkey breast cooked right can be not only an incredible protein source but actually(dare I say) better than chicken! For goodness sake, ground turkey is one of the worst things I’ve put into my mouth but trust me on this one.

For this recipe we opted to make our own buns, you definitely don't have to but there is something about home-made buns that make a meal so much better. I have linked the recipe that we used for the buns, although we did alter it slightly adding less sugar and swapping in 3/4c of whole wheat flour for 1c of white flour.

Ingredients

  • 2 Turkey Breast fillets(roughly the size of a chicken breast)

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • 1/2 tsp oregano

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Coat the turkey breasts with hot sauce and spices and set aside

  2. Preheat oil in a heavy bottom metal pan at medium heat until and add your turkey breast.

  3. Cook with a lid on the pan turning as little as possible. The idea is to get the outside of the turkey browned as much as possible without burning.

  4. When your meat is at the proper temperature(typically stated as 74C/165F) remove immediately from heat.

  5. Assemble your sandwiches with your chosen toppings.

  6. Eat and enjoy!

We are so enjoying our winter comfort food while also keeping it healthy and light and I highly encourage you to do the same! Whichever diet train you choose to jump onto this January this can fit it - you can even do cloud bread for the bun to help this fit in your low carb diet if you are on that as well. We have tried and loved it as well! Another option is to scrap the bun entirely and enjoy the turkey breast cut up over rice or possibly a salad. These meals can be made healthy and enjoyable in so many different ways and are easy to make and just so yummy! These sandwiches can also be made as spicy or mild as you please - next time we are adding pickled jalapenos because we love our life hot and spicy!
